Goals Setting
Goals Setting PDF Print E-mail

At this time of year many start to question what to do and how they will continue to get out of bed in the dark cold mornings.  This is the time to set your goals and to really want to achieve them so that you prepared yourself mentally and physically for these mornings - Short term and Long term goals motivate us.  They are powerful tools that enhance our performance.

When setting goals remember the SMART rule.  Goals must be

Simple - simple in that it takes effort, determination, perserverance and committment to do something - Have we heard those words before???  Goals must provide a level of difficulty but be realistic.

Measureable - how will you measure your goal attainment -  Is is a performance goal?  One that focuses on achieveing a standard in your races or against another competitor?  Will you set an objective goal?  This allows you to attain a specific standard of proficiency on a task within a specific time?

Achieveable - Set up training and racing goals.  Record your goal steps along the way. Talk to your coach about your goals and how you feel you want to acheive them.

Realistic - Be specific to your personality, motivation level and know the direction you want to go in.  Make sure the races you enter are suited to you.

Time dependent - This comes back to short term, long term, training goals for each discipline and race goals.

Working on our weaknesses takes perserverance and therefore time.  Consistency is another key word for improvement and in achieving our goals.  The body loves both these words and the outcome is strength.  Efficiency, form, speed come from strength.  Have a look at what is currently going on in your timetable now that most races are finished ------ the program has stayed consistent and realiable for you.  Training has a mode of 'variation to pace' , strength is slowing creeping in with pull buoys, bands, stair running, hills etc.  To improve and therefore achieve these things need to be apart of your goal setting plan.
