I needed a new life after many years of rowing, and cycling and running were part of normal cross-training for rowing. So I figured all I needed to do was to learn how to swim!....still learning.
I am not much of a sprinter so I like Olympic race distances, however, I would like to try my hand at a half-ironman next year.
I havent been in many, but the second half of any race seems to gets tough as you begin to become dehydrated.
The bike, you dont have to deal with waves or the possibility of sharks, and you don't have that, 'so close but yet so far' feeling in the run.
I love quotes, I stick them on my door so on the mornings where I have to tear myself out of bed to get moving to training I force myself to think about something positive and philosophical upon leaving my room...It seems to help. Some of my favourites are;

"It's a funny thing about life, if you expect nothing but the best you very often get it"

"Champions: train harder, fail more often, get up sooner, and never ever give up"

"The best way out is always through" - Robert Frost

"Unless we undertake more than we can possibly do, we shall never do that we can" - Henry Drummond

"Challenges are what makes life interesting, overcoming them is what makes life meaningful"

"You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them" - Michael Jordan

An old rowing coach told me something which has stayed with me. He said, "races are won at training. You need to train like you are in first place and race like you are in second."
At Kingscliff Triathlon last month is stupidly left my goggles and cap back at our accomodation. Luckily 2XU had set up their tent already and I brought some exciting new goggles and used by provided race cap. So it all worked out, no thanks to my nervous-half-working-4:30am brain.
The QLD boarder climb in Northern NSW.
Complete a half-ironman in 2011
From my newbie two triathlon experiences, I placed; (in my age group)

1st TQ Duathlon (1/08/10)
2nd Kingscliff Triathlon (26/09/10)
QLD Representative in U21 Lightweight Rowing
The people who I train with that are also juggling anything from full time jobs, uni work, assignments, catching-up with friends, family commitments (possibly three kids?!), work into the night with minimal sleep and still come to training with a smile on their face and ready to do the work. It reminds me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
